Salt in Lake

Image
A man came to an elderly Zen master and complained about his problems and sufferings in life. The old master listened to the man carefully and handed him a handful of salt. The man was confused. The man wondered if this magical salt would wash away all the pain and suffering in his life. The master then instructed the man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and drink it. The man did as the master. “How does it taste” asked the master curiously. “Disgusting, Not good at all,” said the man as he spat the salty water.  The master chuckled at the man’s reaction. He then asked the young man to keep the same salt in the lake nearby. The two walked to the nearby lake, and the man swirled salt into the lake. “Now drink the water from the lake,” instructed the master.  The young man drank the water from the lake without any problem. “How does it feel?” asked the master. The man was thirsty and thoroughly enjoyed the cool water of the lake. “It is perfect. I can’t taste any salt, ” th

Elephant and Muddy Pig

An elephant bathed in a river and was travelling along its route.   As it approached a bridge, it noticed a pig completely drenched in dirty mud from opposite directions. The elephant calmly moved to one side, allowing the filthy pig to pass, and then proceeded on its way.As it approached a bridge, it noticed a pig completely drenched in dirty mud from opposite directions. The elephant calmly moved to one side, allowing the filthy pig to pass, and then proceeded on its way.“See how large I am; even the elephant was terrified of me and stepped to one side to allow me to pass,” the dirty pig later boasted to its buddies. When they heard this, several elephants questioned their friend’s actions. ‘Was it due to fear that you moved to the side?” “I could have easily crushed the pig beneath my leg,” the elephant said, “but I was clean, and the pig was quite dirty.” Moreover, crushing it would have made my leg muddy, something I wanted to avoid. As a result, I stepped away.” Moral of the stor

Art of Teaching

Image
Once, a renowned monk lived in a beautiful monastery with many of his pupils. His teachings were very effective, and many of his students became great masters themselves. One day, one of them was caught stealing from his fellow students, and they reported him to the monk. But he took no action against the boy. A few days later, the same boy was again caught stealing. And again, the head monk did nothing to punish him. This angered the other students, who drew up a petition asking for the dismissal of the thief. They threatened to leave en masse if the boy was allowed to stay in the monastery. The teacher called a meeting of the students. When they assembled, he said to them: “You are good boys who know what is right and wrong. If you leave, you will have no trouble joining some other school. But what about your brother, who does not even know the difference between right and wrong? Who will teach him if I don’t? No, I cannot ask him to go, even if it means losing all of you.” Tears p

Boat hole repair

Image
Once a young man was asked to paint a boat of an affluent man. The young man got some red paint and brushes and began to paint the boat, as requested by the owner. While painting, he discovered a tiny hole in the ship’s hull and quietly fixed it. After completion of the painting, the young man received the money for the paint job and left. The boat’s owner showed up at the painter’s house the next day with a substantial check, far greater than the painting payment. “You’ve already given me money for painting the boat, Sir!” said the surprised painter. “But this isn’t for the paint job; it’s for repairing the hull in the boat.” “But it was such a little service… It’s not worth paying me that much for something so insignificant?” said the young man. “My dear boy, you do not understand the significance of your act. Let me tell you what happened.  I forgot to mention the hole when I asked you to paint the boat. When you were done with the paint, my kids took the boat and went on a

Perception-set it right

During one monsoon season, it rained and rained in Chitravathi, a little village by a mighty river. It rained so hard that the river swelled up. Huge waves lashed against the riverbanks and carried away trees, houses and big chunks of earth. The villagers were really scared and prayed hard for the rains to stop. When finally the skies cleared, one by one people emerged from their homes.  One of them was Raju. He walked down to the riverside. There he saw something that made him rub his eyes in disbelief. Why, a huge black rock had appeared there out of nowhere! And what was more, the rock looked exactly like the head of Ganesha, the god with the elephant head. Raju immediately prostrated himself in front of the rock. ‘Ganesha not only heard our prayers and made the rains go away, he has come himself to protect us!’ Raju shouted to no one in particular. ‘I must tell everyone about this!’ he yelled and ran back to the village to shape the news.  Next came Ravi verman, the sculptor. Lakshmi- the Goddess of wealth as per hindu mythology was questioned?

Image
That’s what happened once when Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, found herself cornered by all the other gods. Together, they accused her of one thing—that she never stayed in one place for too long! ‘No sooner are you comfortably settled in one house, do you decide to leave it, and off you go elsewhere!’ they said to her. Lakshmi sniffed and said, ‘That’s not true. I stay in a house as long as I am welcome. If people think ahead, work sincerely and spend money wisely, I stay with them forever. Unfortunately often when I am in one place for a while, people behave strangely, and I have no choice but to leave.’ The other gods pooh-poohed this and refused to believe her. Lakshmi God decided she needed to show them proof of what she had just said. Here is what she did to show that she was correct and she had shown what was happening in booloka (Earth) between the couple named Mahendra and Avantika. A Young couple named Mahendra and Avantika were farmers living in a village. They work

Think outside of the box

“In a small Italian town, hundreds of years ago, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan-shark. The loan-shark was a very old, unattractive looking guy that just so happened to fancy the business owner’s daughter. He decided to offer the businessman a deal that would completely wipe out the debt he owed him. However, the catch was that we would only wipe out the debt if he could marry the businessman’s daughter. Needless to say, this proposal was met with a look of disgust. The loan-shark said that he would place two pebbles into a bag, one white and one black. The daughter would then have to reach into the bag and pick out a pebble. If it was black, the debt would be wiped, but the loan-shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would also be wiped, but the daughter wouldn’t have to marry the loan-shark. Standing on a pebble-strewn path in the businessman’s garden, the loan-shark bent over and picked up two pebbles. Whilst he was picking them up, the da

One night four college kids stayed out late, partying and having a good time. They paid no mind to the test they had scheduled for the next day and didn’t study. In the morning, they hatched a plan to get out of taking their test. They covered themselves with grease and dirt and went to the Dean’s office. Once there, they said they had been to a wedding the previous night and on the way back they got a flat tire and had to push the car back to campus. The Dean listened to their tale of woe and thought. He offered them a retest three days later. They thanked him and accepted his offer that time. When the test day arrived, they went to the Dean. The Dean put them all in separate rooms for the test. They were fine with this since they had all studied hard. Then they saw the test. It had 2 questions. 1) Your Name __________ (1 Points) 2) Which tire burst? __________ (99 Points) Options – (a) Front Left (b) Front Right (c) Back Left (d) Back Right The moral of the story is always be respo

Three fishes and a fisherman

Image
In a large pond has many fishes living in it. Of all these fishes, three are best friends, who are always together. They never leave the side of each other. One day, a fisherman comes to this pond. Seeing lots of fishes, he invites other fishermen to cast nets. The three fishes worry about getting caught and killed by the fishermen. The wise fish amongst them says, “We must find another pond and quickly move from here.” While one fish agrees, the other one is reluctant as he feels that this pond is their home. He says, “We should not behave cowardly, this pond is our home.” The other two fish try hard to convince their friend, but they fail. So they decide to part ways and leave in search of a new pond. On the following day, when the fishermen arrive, the fish, who was unwilling to leave, gets caught and dies. Moral Of The Story is that Always look at the bigger picture and let go of temporary attachments in crisis situations.

“A group of frogs were traveling through the forest when two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that there was no hope left for them. However, the two frogs ignored their comrades and proceeded to try to jump out of the pit. However, despite their efforts, the group of frogs at the top of the pit were still saying that they should just give up as they’d never make it out. Eventually, one of the frogs took heed of what the others were saying and he gave up, jumping even deeper to his death. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the group of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and to just die. He ignored them, and jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, ‘Did you not hear us?’ The frog explained to them that he was deaf, and that he thought they were encouraging him the entire time.”  In life we have to be deaf when we hear about negativity and people w

Reflections

Image
Once, a dog ran into a museum full of mirrors. The museum was unique, the walls, ceiling, doors, and even floors were made of mirrors. Seeing his reflections, the dog froze in the middle of the hall surprisingly. He could see a whole pack of dogs surrounding him from all sides, from top to bottom. The dog bared its teeth and barked all the reflexes that responded in the same way. Horrified, the dog barked feverishly, the dog’s reflexes followed and raised him many times. The dog barked even louder, but the echo was enlarged. The dog flung from side to side while its reflexes also stirred and cracked its teeth. The next morning, security guards at the museum found the miserable and lifeless dog surrounded by thousands of reflections of the lifeless dog. There was no one to hurt the dog. The dog died in battle with its reflexes. Moral of the story is that the world does not bring good or evil by itself. All that is happening around us is the reflection of our thoughts, feelings, desire

Baby said, “Why do camels have humps?” The mother said, “Well son, we are desert animals, we need the humps to conserve water and we are recognized to survive without water” Baby said, “Okay, then why are our legs long and our feet rounded?” The mother said, “Son,  they are meant for walking in the desert. You realize with these legs I can move around the desert better than anyone does!” Baby said, “Okay, then why are our eyelashes lengthy? Sometimes it bothers my vision”. Mother with pride said, “My son, those long midst eyelashes are your protective cover. They enable you to protect your eyes from the desert sand and wind”. Baby after thinking said, “I glimpse. So the hump is to conserve water when we are in the desert, the legs are for stepping through the desert and these eyelashes protect

“Do you know how hunters of old used to trap monkeys?” A man asked his child. “Rather than chasing them up a tree or shooting arrows from below, they’d put a heavy glass jar with a narrow neck on the floor, which had the monkeys’ favorite food inside. They’d then step back and hide, waiting for the unsuspecting animal to approach. When it did, the monkey would reach inside, clench a fist around the food, and try to pull it out. However, the narrow neck of the jar would stop the poor monkey from getting its hand out! It’d pull and pull, but to no avail. There was simply no way to get its hand out of the jar without releasing the food. Rather than letting go, though, the monkey would persevere, refusing to drop its dinner. The hunters would then approach and catch it to enjoy a meal of their own.” “Don’t be like that monkey,” warned the man, “In life, to fight another day and grow as person, you must know when to quit, when to move on, and when to let go of whatever’s holding you back.

Practice to be in the role of encourager

Image
Don’t beat yourself up if encouraging people doesn’t come naturally. It’s not easy! You have to listen, relate, empathize and sacrifice. None of those things are a walk in the park. This is a skill. And, like any skill, learning how to encourage someone takes time. Practice makes perfect though, so try to offer encouragement of one form or another at every opportunity! With time, effort, and patience, you’ll start feeling far more comfortable in the role of encourager.

Very special Bank account

Image
I magine you had a bank account that deposited $86,400 each morning. The account carries over no balance from day to day, allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every dollar each day! We all have such a bank. Its name is Time. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever time you have failed to use wisely. It carries over no balance from day to day. It allows no overdraft so you can’t borrow against yourself or use more time than you have. Each day, the account starts fresh. Each night, it destroys an unused time. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, it’s your loss and you can’t appeal to get it back. There is never any borrowing time. You can’t take a loan out on your time or against someone else’s. The time you have is the time you have and that is that. Time management is yours to decide how you spend the time, just

O n the banks of a river, there is a tree where a swarm of bees set up their beehive. They remain busy the entire day buzzing on flowers and collecting honey. One fine day, a bee feels thirsty and goes to the river to drink some water. As the bee tries to drink, a wave of the current sweeps it away. The bee starts drowning. Fortunately, a beautiful dove, who has been watching from a distance, rushes to help the poor bee. She plucks a big leaf from a tree and flies towards the bee. The dove places the leaf near the bee. The bee mounts on the leaf and dries its wings. In some time, the bee finds the strength to fly away to safety. A couple of weeks later, the dove is caught in a dangerous situation. As she is sitting on the branch of a tree, an archer targets at her. The dove looks for an escape but sees a large hawk hovering around her. That’s when her good deed returns to her. The bee comes to her rescue by stinging the archer hard. By then the archer releases the arrow, which misses t

Boiling water experiment

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing? After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer,” he said, “and touch
